Why Bill Maher Started Sounding Like a Conservative

“What the masks showed us, the parents, the most powerful group in the country, is that we are taking back the wheel.” So said Brian Echevarria at a recent school board meeting in North Carolina. “We are taking back the wheel from Washington to Raleigh all the way to the local school board. Because CRT – the parents don’t want it.”

Meanwhile, the host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher sounds increasingly like a conservative. Calling out the madness of the radical Left, he insists he hasn’t changed so much as the Left in this country has. But what has changed is that the chickens have come home to roost.

Maher would be wiser to meditate on Proverbs 26:18-19.

“Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death
is the man who deceives his neighbor
and says, “I am only joking!””

So also a recent exchange comes to mind between Republican Senator John Kennedy from Louisiana and Fox News host Jesse Waters in which Senator Kennedy quipped regarding Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, “To be a smart ass, you first have to be smart.”

Bill Maher meanwhile says he’s the same unmarried, childless, pot-smoking libertine he’s always been. And I think that’s not only true, but that therein lies the explanation for how we got here and why he’s speaking out now.

Revolutionary Buzzkill

The radical Left in its tireless crusade is harshing Maher’s groove and killing his buzz. 

The bastards fathered by generations of self-indulgent radicals whose guiding principle was making their responsibilities everyone else’s problem have been calling the shots, and the revolution in fact is not so sexy as it before looked in theory when anyone and everyone else would have to pay for it.

Vapid sloganizing about the rich paying their fair share and the need for more regulation, taxation, and welfare programs sounded lovely when it absolved individuals of the expectation that they would get married, raise a family, and steward well their church, town, state, and nation.

If only we had been more the students of Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, and Alexis de Tocqueville, and less the uncritical admirers of Thomas Paine. The conservative tradition – first theologically, then socially, fiscally, and politically – could have saved us a lot of trouble.

But wise King Solomon told us true when he said “there is no new thing under the sun.”

To quote Margaret Thatcher, “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

Jokes aside, other people’s money is not the only thing that eventually runs out under socialism. So also, other people’s patience eventually runs out. And when it does, socialism stops being cute and romantic, and it starts to show itself more and more to be the dangerous repressive thing it always was.
