Home Library Reorganizational Philosophy

Home Library Reorganizational Philosophy The Garrett Ashley Mullet Show

Thursday being my first day off after seven on, I resolved to reorganize our home library while the older boys worked on tidying up the garage and Lauren painted our daughter’s dressers.

Between homeschooling and my wife having been a librarian in another life, plus the both of us loving to hit up used bookstores online and IRL, we have more than a few titles in our home. And it’s been a while since we last assessed which titles go where and why, and organized them, so everything got all mixed up.

But now I am in the process of setting this right. So my wife’s books get their shelf where her primary interest titles reside. A couple of shelves house mine – one for Christian life and thought, and another is literally busting at the seems, sagging under the weight of histories and biographies.

Next I will jump into separating the kids books upstairs. Non-fiction free reads will go on the one in the hallway between Evelyn’s bedroom and ours. The shelf in the family room will keep the reference guides and non-fiction. Required reading for school, meanwhile, will stay on two shelves on the main floor.

We have few books that we would call pretty, or collectable. Though now and again we do pick up antiques we find – first or second editions from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century. With eight children, those will stay on the top whatever shelves they’re on.

And some day when our kids are grown and out of the house, perhaps then we will splurge on the pretty ones with the nicer materials on the cover. In the meantime, we try not to judge books by their covers.

Preferring instead second-hand titles already showing some wear, the real value is in the knowledge and understanding anyway. Let that endure and not collect dust, and we will be content.
